Rebeca Méndez TEDxUCLA Talk Preview

Rebeca Méndez. Photo by Joan Dooley.
Michael Dooley, our Design History and Context instructor, wrote a great article in Imprint, The Online Community for Graphic Designers. The piece has incredible scope, including info about Rebeca Méndez's upcoming TEDxUCLA talk. Here's an excerpt:
MD: Speaking of migration, how were you selected for your upcoming Arctic talk at next month’s TEDxUCLA?
RM: Scott Hutchinson, who organized the series, knows me and has followed my work for many years. The TED talks are about a compelling story. The high Arctic expedition I participated in October of last year, aboard a 100-year old, ice class sailboat in the international territory of Svalbard is a good story. I created several artworks during the expedition, and the seeds of a new artwork called “Circumpolar” were planted.
Rebeca also discusses how she separates art from design. AND, in the same article, there are many great images, including a fun photo of Andrew Kutchera.

DCA grad looking to hire!
Here is a happy email from recent DCA grad Justin Curtis, who just so happens to know about a web design job opening...
Karen, you may recall that I completed the DCA certificate and had my portfolio review last Fall. I'm just writing to let you know what I've been doing since then and to let you know of a potential job opportunity that may be good for a DCA student or grad interested in web design.
After my portfolio review, I landed a job with a company called RealPractice. The company provides a number of services to small law firms and solo practicing attorneys, including practice management tools, online marketing services, and web design. I'm officially on the marketing team, but my job functions primarily entail building web sites for our clients. The company is also looking to expand offering their online marketing services to other types of professionals/businesses.
We have a need to fill another position similar to mine and you can find the job posting posted at our corporate website here. (It is the job posting entitled "Marketing Web Team Intern"). To clarify, this is a PAID position and is CONTRACT-TO-HIRE. (I don't think it actually states that in the posting). Initially, it will entail up to 35 hours a week of work on-site, with the potential to be hired on full-time. This is an opening that would be ideal for someone who wants to pursue a career in web design.
The office is located at 4 Hutton Centre Drive #680, Santa Ana, CA. It is right next door to South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, where the 405 and the 55 freeways meet.
I hope all is well with you and Scott. If you need any further information from me about this job opening, please let me know. If you think it is appropriate, it would be wonderful if you could help me get the word out about this job opportunity.
Best Regards,
Justin Curtis

Photos Set to Music!
Exploring LA Design with Michael Dooley from DCA on Vimeo.
I love how Pummelvision made the awesome Get Seen Gallery slideshow from Exploring L.A. Design with Michael Dooley seem like a super-speedy immersive design tour of L.A. Which it is, but set to music it's even more so. Right?
The 6-week workshop ended this past weekend, but Michael will be teaching Design History and Context this fall with DCA. Check it out! There is great documentation of what you can make in that course too, just check out our DCA Flickr.

Linocuts by DCA Student Jared Millar
Jared has his own show at the Irvine Fine Arts Center! Here's how he describes it:
Similar to woodcuts -- but cut from a piece of linoleum instead of wood -- each of these prints are 12" x 12" and cut from two separate blocks of linoleum, one for each color. The series pays homage to classic American fruit crate labels.
Congratulations, Jared! It is up until the end of May so check it out.

About AIGA Portfolio Review : Future Reference
Aileen Tu, our AIGA Student Group President, keeps a Google Group for DCA discussions. Want to join? Email Aileen to join: aiga.uclax aileentu.com
Here is her latest note to the group, which I've abbreviated here. If you want full details in the future, be sure to join the conversation!
I went to the AIGA LA Student Portfolio Review Day over the weekend and I'm so glad I did! Despite only having about five pieces in my portfolio, I got a lot out of the day.
Being able to attend even though I just started the program last quarter was great because I didn't feel the pressure to have something amazing. I could just enjoy the day, enjoy talking to the reviewers and openly take in their advice. I highly recommend going to the next Portfolio Review Day even if you don't feel ready--you really do learn a lot from the experience.
And the advice that came up the most throughout the day: HAVE A STRONG FOUNDATION IN TYPOGRAPHY!!
This is my advice for students attending Portfolio Review Day for the first time:
1. Research the Reviewers
2. Make Some Business Cards and/or a Leave-behind
3. Get there Early
4. Be Open to Seeing Any Reviewers
5. Ask Questions
6. Talk to Other Students
7. Hang Out in the Hallway
8. Remember that Critiques are Opinions
