Here is her latest note to the group, which I've abbreviated here. If you want full details in the future, be sure to join the conversation!
I went to the AIGA LA Student Portfolio Review Day over the weekend and I'm so glad I did! Despite only having about five pieces in my portfolio, I got a lot out of the day.
Being able to attend even though I just started the program last quarter was great because I didn't feel the pressure to have something amazing. I could just enjoy the day, enjoy talking to the reviewers and openly take in their advice. I highly recommend going to the next Portfolio Review Day even if you don't feel ready--you really do learn a lot from the experience.
And the advice that came up the most throughout the day: HAVE A STRONG FOUNDATION IN TYPOGRAPHY!!
This is my advice for students attending Portfolio Review Day for the first time:
1. Research the Reviewers
2. Make Some Business Cards and/or a Leave-behind
3. Get there Early
4. Be Open to Seeing Any Reviewers
5. Ask Questions
6. Talk to Other Students
7. Hang Out in the Hallway
8. Remember that Critiques are Opinions
