Right before the break, a recent graduate emailed us with a question about a freelance opportunity. While she was excited, she was also overwhelmed. How does it work? Where to begin? How to charge? Here are some quick guidelines that SH offered:
Hi Alexandra,
That is a complex question -- I would use the graphic artist guild pricing and ethics guideline book, which articulates the factors - your overhead, experience, background, type of work, type of company.
I'd also look at the AIGA Aquent salary survey, again an excellent vehicle so you feel good about the fee you are charging.
With that said and without any of the information I just outlined, $30-60 per hour is normal if ongoing for a new designer.
And, many people (myself included) like to charge a flat rate with clear deliverables and the number of revision rounds listed in the contract.
Hope that helps, and happy holidays,
Regards,
Scott
