Design Work on Display

Design by Sara Vadgama

Design by Daniel Krog

Design by Julie Reiner-Sather
Design by Bulut Sakcak

Design by Alana Crane

Thanks to Henry Mateo for oft posting student work in the halls at 1010. This time he really outdid himself, building museum quality vitrines to protect and showcase student's work. They're lovely displays! Way to go everyone!

Check out his complete Facebook album of talented student work, with photos taken by Sara Vadgama. Thank you, too, Sara!

Andrew Kutchera is also posting student work this week, in the basement. Check out how different students interpret a type assignment, by hand.

Marian Bantjes New Book by Monday!

Image from bantjes.com

I took "Things I Have Learned in My Life So Far" by Stefan Sagmeister out of Scott's office last week and have been enjoying it ever since. Have you seen it? It came out in 2008 and it's really wonderful, both in terms of presentation and content. I'm talking about the book in this case, although the website is an ongoing collaborative effort, and wonderful too.

Anyway, in Sagmeister's book, Marian Bantjes, who is one of Lutska's favorites, makes some swirly type with sugar. Since sugar is one of my favorites, it's a delight on a few different levels. She's got her own book coming out shortly. It's called, "I Wonder" which is a great title, in my opinion because I wonder too. Turns out if you order it from Amazon now, you can have it by Monday. Just an FYI.

Her website has some beautiful images of valentines cut from old holiday cards, too. Way better than any recycling I've ever done.

Michael Dooley's Conversation with a "Mad Man" and More

Here's an email (and image) I got from Michael:

In July, Print magazine launched its new online edition, "Imprint," with me as a regular contributor. My column deals with design events around the So Cal area, mostly in Los Angeles. The format is Q&A, preceded by a long-winded introduction.

So far I've covered:

http://imprint.printmag.com/animation/icon-reax-is-animation-the-future-of-illustration/

http://imprint.printmag.com/design-thinking/the-future-of-web-fonts-is-sooner-than-it-used-to-be/

http://imprint.printmag.com/design-thinking/dutch-designer-sophie-krier-talks-drive-thru-crits-the-fame-bubble-and-buster-keaton/

and various other activities.

My most recent post, meant to link with this season's concluding episode of the best show on the tee-vee, is titled "Why George Lois is Wrong About Mad Men." It's really a conversation with one of Chiat/Day's original art directors, about the good old 1960s. It's also a follow-up to a field trip I'd recently taken with my Art Center design history students, to a downtown event called "The Mad Men of L.A."

Now that school's back in session, if any White Boards readers know of upcoming design happenings around town that might lead to a good Imprint interview, please let me know (michael at michaeldooley.com) and I'll check 'em out. Hey, thanks!

Birds by Ashley Tomlinson

Thank you Rochelle, for letting me know that DCA Certificate Student Ashley Tomlinson has an exhibit at the Santa Monica Art Studios from now through November 13.

Here is Rochelle's lovely report from opening night:

Hey Karen:

Ashley is in my calligraphy class this quarter, but I first met her in Erin's bookbinding class this past summer. She is kind of quiet in class but her real personality shines through in her work. It's vibrant and thoughtful and fun.

Ashley's work -- painting and mixed media -- was displayed prominently along a well-attended corridor inside Santa Monica Art Studios, which held an open house and showcased the work of various artists in varying media. The reception was the perfect antidote to a drizzly Saturday evening.

There was so much inspiration and a lot of sharing among visitors and artists. Ashley's parents flew in from the Bahamas for the show and several DCA students and a few Extension teachers and staffers came out to show their support. It was great fun seeing familiar faces and meeting new people whom I'd seen in hallways but had never had a chance to speak with. I think it's always great fun getting together with people outside of the context of UCLA Extension. It just adds a whole other dimension to the work we see in our classrooms, and at least for me, expands what is possible.

I know there are a lot of other DCA students who do great -- and different -- work outside of school, and I think it would be great fun at some point to explore the diverse landscape with an exhibit at UCLA Extension. I'm just throwing that out there.

Have a great week.

Rochelle

"Logo Debacle"

I really like the word "debacle" but don't often see it. In this BBC article that discusses other rebranding failures in light of The Gap taking it all back, they use it. It's a quick read that highlights other logo mishaps, and why they failed - including how the BP logo has been altered (by the public) since the Deepwater Horizon debacle, and the use of Helvetica.

Read it here.

Scotch Tape Teaser

I was in the elevator with Suzanne, the ArcID advisor, when I noticed a sad poster, face down on the floor. When I picked it up I said - Hark! This is but a poster for an AIGA event! I must rescue it.

And so I did. The poster lives on in the east elevator with fresh tape to hold it high and proud. Through the magic of technology you can see it here too. She is looking right at you. Yes, YOU. If you'll read the details, you'll see this panel is hosted by our very own Michael Dooley. Go!

Since I just saw The Social Network (I still love your work Mr. Sorkin), this chart is just in time. Yet another example of an awesome infographic. Read all about it on overthinkingit.com.

A tale of a few logos

On the way to work this morning there on Wilshire just west of the 405, I saw a version of this on a billboard for Goodwill:

I thought it mighty clever and assume that this time of year is a big revenue generator for the charity. When I did a little research I found that it's by The Miller Group, and there is also a TV spot that goes with it. I like it!

This, on the right, I like less:

As you can tell from the red slash through the new Gap logo, obviously I'm not alone. Here is the full story from racked.com. It's all about how the backlash about the new logo is causing The Gap to spin, spin, spin...

Related story here. What do you think? Does anyone like the new logo?

So far they've only done two posters, but they're two lovely posters. Certainly this type of infographic is a trend, and one that I'd be happy to decorate with.

Type Poster of Delight

My husband (!) has been working on jazzing up a data-driven website as a part of his job and has fallen in love with all things design. He found this poster, by one of my people, and I've got to say it's pretty awesome.

This is the link where he stumbled upon this delight.
