Constructing a Revolution: Free Talk (and Great Poster)

Poster Design by DCA Student Eric Gardner

Hi, Karen ~

Eric Gardner was one of several top students in my UCLAx "Design History and Context" class last fall. You may remember that one of his poster assignments, for an imagined Alvin Lustig lecture, became an actual promotion for an actual Lustig talk, by Professor Joe Molloy, at my Loyola Marymount University Design History class this past spring. Joe had viewed Eric's work at the opening of my class's student poster exhibition at the [1010] Westwood Center Gallery, and had admired it so much that Eric revised the date and location so that it worked as an official LMU school announcement.

Well, he's scored again!

Eric had designed other posters as well, including one to promote a fictional talk about Soviet Constructivism.

And once again, yet another guest speaker, who'll be coming to my LMU class next week, was so impressed by yet another of Eric's DH&C designs that Eric's updating of THAT poster is now posted all over LMU's campus.

And speaking of that lecture, it's free to UCLAx students... and anyone else who'd like to show up! It'll be on Friday, October 8th, at LMU's Burns 211.

Here's the promo info:

The 1917 Revolution in Soviet Russia also launched a revolutionary movement in the arts. For the first time in history artists, architects, and designers joined together to play a vital role in the building of a new society. On Friday, October 8th, museum curator Christopher Mount will present an in-depth, critical survey of the buildings, books, posters, and art – as well as the politics and culture – of Soviet Constructivism. Among other exhibitions, Christopher organized the Museum of Modern Art's show of Russian movie posters by the Stenberg Brothers.

Come join us!

Congrats to Brad!

The good news just keeps on coming! Brad Serum, who has taught Indesign with us and will be teaching Photoshop in the winter quarter, has his design work included in the Communication Arts 2010 Design Annual. Look for this image of self-inking stamps from Knock Knock in the glossy pages.

Seriously, only 187 designs were chosen from 4,564 entries. I'm not up for that math right now on figuring out the percentage of those accepted, but it's small.

Also, you know you can subscribe to Comm Arts at a discount as a student, right?

25% off any purcahse over $50 at Swain's

You need a yellow flier that can be found at 1010 to cash in on this deal, good from September 20 through October 3. It's negotiated for you, UCLA Extension art student!

Kudos to Stacy Kimmel!

Package Design by Stacy Kimmel.

Look familiar? We used an image of Stacy's package design in the fall catalog. John Beach just emailed me to pass on the good news that Stacy, who is a certificate student in advanced print and graphic communication, just won the Graphic Design USA - 2010 American Graphic Design Awards Annual Competition. Both the Om Vineyard package you see here, along with her Heel the Modern Dog Lifestyle Magazine (created in publication design with John) were chosen.

Congratulations, Stacy!

You can still enroll in Package Design with John Beach this fall quarter! Maybe you'll produce award-winning work with him too.

Update: Here is more info about the publication, which Stacy shared with me:

Graphic Design USA is a trade publication I have been reading for almost 20 years.
Here is the website - http://www.gdusa.com/.

GDUSA has 2 design annuals during the year.

1. In-House Graphic Design Awards
2. American Graphic Design Awards

I submitted the 2 attached projects under the student section for the American Graphic Design Awards. There was about 8,000 submissions and 15% of the submissions where selected. UCLA Extension will be referenced in my credits.

The competition is open to advertising agencies, graphic design firms, corporations, institutions, publishers and more. It honors outstanding work across all media: print and collateral, advertising and sales promotion, corporate identity and logos, internet and interactive design, packaging and p-o-p, broadcast and motion graphics.

The award winning pieces will be published in the 300 page American Graphic Design Annual which serves as a combined November/December edition of GDUSA. At the same time the projects will be featured in the Online Winners Gallery with a live link to the designers website. Between the printed and the online Annual, winning design are seen by more than 100,000 colleagues, clients, creative and marketing decision makers.

Here are some more of Stacy's winning images:

Pointed Pen Calligraphy

Alisara Tareekes made this poster to promote the upcoming course with Carrie Imai this fall. Alisara recently returned from Massachusetts, where she had a scholarship to attend the 2010 International Calligraphy Conference! While there, she had her work critiqued by the White House Chief Calligrapher, Pat Blair. So cool!

More details to come...

Congrats, Pash!

Miles Davis logo by Pash

Pash got a crazy cool new job! My question is, will he have to wear a suit?

He plans to keep on teaching with us even though he's going to be busy with his new duties. In the past he has taught Design Fundamentals, Icons and Logos and Logotype Design (this fall), Design II and the popular elective Graphic Design Career Launch Pad (this winter 2011).

Here is the email that went out as the announcement:

We are pleased to announce Pash (whose full name is Matt Pashkow) as our new VP, Creative Development and Brand Management. Pash will be responsible for overseeing the development and management of all brand identity and program franchise strategies that are articulated through visual design for all programs and products related to ABC Entertainment and ABC Studios programming, as well as the management of the integrity of the ABC logo and its related graphic elements. In other words, Pash is our new head of brand and design and he will be working to create a look, feel and personality for ABC and ABC Entertainment Group programming that is innovative, unique and cohesive across all platforms and consumer touch points.

Pash is a renowned design strategist, author, and educator with more than 20 years of experience in the field of design. He has designed the official logo for Miles Davis, brand extensions for Playboy, products for John Varvatos, retail product strategy for Motown Records, and advertising for Perrier. His book, Inspirability, was published in 2005 and features personal interviews with 40 of the world’s most prominent and interesting graphic designers.

(This last part, his bio, may look familiar as it's in the UCLA Extension catalog, too.) Congratulations again, Pash!

The Refinery Creative Intern Wanted

The Refinery Creative is looking for a full-time intern to join its team. Our interns enjoy the opportunity to work on print and digital advertising campaigns for major television, theatrical, and home entertainment clients, gaining practical skills and portfolios for careers in design.

Applicants are expected to have working knowledge of graphic design and should be adept with the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), Apple operating systems, and Wacom tablets. Additionally, priority consideration will be given to applicants who can demonstrate working knowledge of motion graphics (After Effects). Applicants should be able to see their art from concept to finish; this might include sketches, stock images, typography, and photography.

The full-time internship will last 12 weeks. Class credit and/or a stipend are available, and some meals are provided.

To apply, please send your portfolio and a brief letter introducing yourself and telling us why you’re right for the position to intern@therefinerycreative.com.

What we’re looking for:

•RESOURCEFULNESS: We want to see you create or find your own imagery, typography, etc. In advertising, you don’t always get decent assets. You are encouraged to use your own photography, illustration, painting, etc., in addition to fully utilizing the scope of Photoshop skills at your disposal.

•ORIGINALITY: While entertainment marketing certainly has formulas, we look for innovation. Show us an original idea, we’ll show you a winner!

•EXECUTION: Taste, quality and finesse are very important. Knowing your way around Photoshop is a huge plus in our portfolio. Show us your skills, attention to detail and an aesthetic that represents your point of view. [We may ask to review your PSD files.]

Thank you for your interest,

The Refinery
