Mixed Media and Collage Lives!

Collage by Jay Stuckey

Although James Fish is moving to Paris, that doesn't mean the end of Mixed Media and Collage for Designers and Artists. He is working on an online version of the course (for the winter quarter, which will mean two instructors and three online courses from France! Oh, these times we live in.)

Back in L.A., Jay Stuckey is teaching the course this summer. Cristina did an interview with him that you can read here, along with see more images of his work. You can also read more about him here and here.

It's taught in arguably the best room in 1010 (320). And, it credits as an elective in any Design Communication Arts certificate.

Here is one of my favorite images by Jay Stuckey, which is a watercolor:

UCLAx Design Presents: Creativity vs. Innovation

NOW ON JUNE 10!

Creativity vs. Innovation: The world needs more innovators

The American economy needs original designers at every level of our society. Instinct fuels a designer’s creative ability to see new patterns and possibilities where others only see chaos, but innovation requires going further to understand what new value points the idea offers, how it challenges existing solutions, and if it makes a unique connection with its user.

This workshop introduces methodologies, key tools, and techniques to help you look at the world from the customer’s point of view and create innovative solutions that will lead to a quantum leap in value.

Mr. Hindell assists entrepreneurs, designers, and management for all types of industry in the generation, development and articulation of innovative solutions. Mr. Hindell is recognized as a value innovation specialist, and has spoken at conferences and events in the US and abroad on the topic. Some notable projects of Mr. Hindell in the public domain include the concept development and business planning for Palate Food + Wine and the strategic redefinition of Pitfire Pizza.

To Be A Web Designer

Scott was a reviewer at the AIGA Portfolio Day last Saturday. He said that a few people asked him what companies are looking for in a web designer. He chose this description as one that explains the needs well and paraphrased it as "strong design, some technical, user experience and enthusiasm to do something big."

Jumo is a technology/product-focused non-profit seeking motivated, experienced web designers for a small team. You will be responsible for designing and producing user interfaces and graphics for use throughout the site, with a strong focus on the end user experience. Qualifications include:

- Experience designing for fast-paced, fast-growing sites. (Please include links/examples with description)
- Ability to work in collaboration with a small team of technologists to shape and design the user experience
- Ability to creatively, conscientiously, and rapidly move through prototyping, wire-framing, user state/interaction design, and finalized stages
- Advanced experience with tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
- The competence and confidence to own your own work. Early in the project you will be the sole designer.
- A passion for building great sites and designs coupled with an enthusiasm for engaging in rapid prototyping and fast-paced development
- A working knowledge of how html, css and javascript work. The ability to work with these web technologies is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and think creatively about technical solutions to human problems
- Ability to grasp the big picture, have big ideas with the courage to voice them
- A drive to develop new skills

Books Not iPads

Designs by Erin Zamrzla.

When Scott sees the title of this post he may shudder, but there's room enough in this graphic design program for both of us. I'm the semi-Luddite type and he's the I'm-going-to-stand-in-line-before-Apple-opens-type (as he did for the iPad). Also, that's a lot of dashes.

Anyway, I have an i-Touch which to me is the mini version of the iPad, which is fine but would be better if it were a phone - although for a while I did enjoy air hockey and the falling jewels game. Also the battery doesn't last too long. This is neither here nor there really.

What I'm trying to say is, You know what i-Things aren't to me? Pretty. I know this is arguable, and I like their simple design and all that. I'm a big Apple fan. But I don't want to stand in the store for hours picking things up in my hand, oohing and ahhing, like I do in a fine stationary store, where I might find things like this:

I mean, it's just so sweet and pretty. And, often eco-riffic. It just so happens that this talented bookbinder, Erin Zamrzla, will be teaching Handmade Books in the summer. You can make sweet things too! And, if her DIY guides are any indication, she will be able to give clear instruction.

If you make something, send us a photograph!

TCB: GO AIGA PR

Like a dork, I often like to speak in acronyms. I did this way before days of texting, just for the record. I'm not sure it's something to brag about, but for some reason it sort of delights me to condense phrases into abbreviations.

Yeah, so, okay.

What I'm trying to say is, take care of business and go to the AIGA Portfolio Review. It's this Saturday. As in, a few days. Our very own Portfolio Polish instructor Allison Bloss will be there, along with a million other awesome reviewers. It's better to go with something that isn't perfect than to tell yourself you're not going because it isn't perfect.

I mean it! If you go, please tell me all about it. Then I'll tell everyone else about it via this blog.

KIT.

First Pick of Reviewers!

"Faculty and Students,

As you may already know, this year's Portfolio Day will be held at CSU Los Angeles on May 15th. We would like two volunteers from each school, and to hear back from you (or your AIGA student group members) as to the names, numbers, and email addresses of your volunteers. As soon as your volunteers contact us, I will give them the information they need (parking, directions, assigned jobs, etc.) in order to help us at this event.

It is important to note that the volunteers do not have to be AIGA members, but if they are they get first pick for reviewers when they come in that morning."

... Please email me if you'd like to volunteer.
