AIGA Student Portfolio Day

After some clarification with AIGA, it's been determined that this is the event you want to attend (there was some confusion earlier which I won't go into explaining). It's really a great opportunity.

Get your portfolio ready by May 15!

May 14: Comm Arts Annual

Every time I post something about a contest I get the suspicion that I've lost you before I've gotten to the end of the first sentence. Maybe this is true. Hello?

I know you're busy, but seriously, you've already created your entry! Look to your favorite assignment that bloomed into an awesome portfolio piece, or think of that campaign that you had to do all the research for that turned out better than expected?

Use what you've got to enter these contests. If you make it, you've got great exposure and a nice claim to fame on your resume. If you don't, you're out forty bucks, but that's less than a parking ticket, which sucks more than not winning a contest. (Don't think too much about that logic. Please.)

Here are the specs for design and advertising. If you win, I hope you tell me.

Collaborate with UCLAx Film Students

Below is an email I received from Josh, who is looking for a graphic designer to work with him and the rest of their crew on a film. If you'd like more information about collaborating with him, please email dca@uclaextension.edu and I'll forward his email to you.

Hi Karen,

It was great meeting you the other day at UCLA Extension. Just to recap on our conversation, I am looking for a student who is great with graphic design who can assist me in web design and logo creation. This is totally a collaborative project where creative control is given to the artist as well. We are looking for someone responsible and willing to give their opinion about what works and what doesn't visually. We are looking for someone who is familiar with Hollywood and the scene and feel. Again, this is a collaborative effort and we are not looking to just come in and tell the person what to do. I would rather have them tell me what needs to be done and for us to discuss it and have them carry it out once it has been voted on as a collected unit by my producing team and the artist. We are trying to form a family type atmosphere where the graphic design becomes an official part of the team and has not only a credit on the film but a role in helping us shape it. This is a great opportunity because it allows a student to become involved in the film medium and gains priceless contacts through my Rolodex.

A little background about me. I am currently attending UCLA Extension in their Producing certificate. I have previously worked at the William Morris Agency and currently work at a production company called Mess Media with 4 time Emmy award winner Scott Messick. As I mention previously, I also founded a networking organization that connects people in the entertainment industry together. This is great for any graphic design student because it allows them to gain possible business and future jobs and contacts. I am not some guy off the street looking to make a student do my bidding. I am looking for someone that I can bring into my "family" and begin a continued working relationship with so I can do projects with them in the future as well. I hope this answers some of your questions, if not all. Please let me know if you have anymore questions.

Best,
Josh

Cue Pomp and Circumstance

June 29, 2010, UCLA Extension will hold it's graduation ceremony for all certificate students, across departments, at Royce Hall. It will be awesome! Go here for more details.

Seriously, your accomplishments are big and this is the way to celebrate! Also, let's represent Design Communication Arts. In addition, there is a video contest to be the guest student speaker. Deadline is April 14. I know that's not a lot of time, but hey, with today's technology and your creativity, I'm sure you can get something together this weekend. For real.

If you plan on finishing (coursework and portfolio review) this or summer quarter, please let me know as soon as possible. I must submit a list of names this month.

If you have questions about how the final portfolio review works, please see the PDF posted on the right side of this blog. And, sign up for Portfolio Polish! It's April 24 and it's free for certificate students. It's also almost full.

New York City, Designed By

Geoffrey Mandel is teaching Graphic Design for Film and TV this quarter, while he's busy working on Mad Men. In February, the show won the Art Directors Guild award for one hour single camera television series. Congratulations!

On a related note, Geoffrey recently had an article published in the February-March edition of Perspective, the Journal of the Art Directors Guild. You can read it here (go to page 30 of the magazine, which is page 17 of the PDF).

Here is an excerpt:

"One of my first tasks for Production Designer Dan Bishop and Art Director Christopher Brown was to re-create a subway station exit in Brooklyn from which Peggy emerges after a hard day at the office. Back in 1963, there were no lettered, numbered or color-coded subway lines anywhere in New York City, just a confusing morass of IND, BMT and IRT lines that had once been run by separate companies."

In addition to hinting at the work ahead of him, this excerpt also helps me appreciate the work of
Unimark International in making the much more user-friendly subway signage system that we know today.

Across the pond

I received this email last week, which I investigated as the real deal. It seems fun! Remember in grade school when your teacher would arrange for you to write pen pals in other countries? It's kind of like that.

I am a combined BA Honours Graphic Design & Illustration student from London studying at the University of East London; it's my first year and enjoying it very much so far. As part of my new project I have to contact an L.A student who is studying graphic design. My brief is to post a list of things (such as photocopy examples of any of my works) and receive a letter with example of their work in return. Here's the original brief that my University teacher gave me.

King regards,
Rahul
