The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
It's easy to get overwhelmed at the beginning of a quarter. There are new courses, new instructors, unforeseen snafus and just a whole lot of stuff going on. But today I remembered why it's also so fun...
It's the new students! The ones who are so excited about going to class for the first time, and meeting others who are into the same thing and exploring the possibility of committing to a certificate program, or who are already ready to jump in and do it.
It's a really fun work day when people keep telling you how excited they are about what they're about to do. I got to hear that a lot today. I'm excited for you!
So, happy spring quarter (which starts Monday, March 29).

UCLAx Design Presents: How did you get that image?

Poster design by Alisara Tareekes
Create an image that has strong shape and drama! Learn how to light a person for a maximum impact. George Simian will demonstrate how to improve your photographic skills by using simple cameras and common light sources, as well as how to choose the right natural light. He will also discuss cameras, lenses, lights, flashes, and post-processing. Don’t miss this one!
George Simian was one of Boston's leading annual report photographers until six years ago, when he discovered that there's no winter in LA! After three decades of exposing film he has seen the digital light, and has been capturing exclusively digitally for over seven years. His expertise lies in photographing for corporate advertising, performing color management and correction, as well as spreading the digital gospel by teaching at UCLA Extension.
When: Monday, April 12th, 7:00 – 9:30 pm
Location: 1010 Westwood Blvd., 90024; Room 306
THIS EVENT IS FREE BUT YOU MUST RSVP.

Tugboat Printshop - It's a Woodcut!

Even though I just found this link this morning, I can't remember how I came to it, which is sad, and tells you just how badly I'm suffering from computer head.
Tugboat Printshop is in Pittsburgh, where I recently traveled to in the fall. Their work boggles my impatient mind. Check it out!

What Else Can You Do With a Design Education?
I was at my desk today (because it's cold and windy out there), eating my lunch (minestrone) and breezing through the pages of Communication Arts Advertising Annual 50. Do you read this? If you want to, we have discounted subscriptions for students. Just say the word.
Anyway, I was drawn to an article by RitaSue Siegel, the title of which is the same as the title of this blog post. Read it here. She really gets into how job searches these days are even more fueled by networking and connections than in the past (free AIGA membership, anyone?).

Hi Karen –
This person would be the lone designer and we do all design in-house. We have CS4 with Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign – no Dreamweaver. We are a PC house and don’t support Macs.
We also have Camtasia for video editing. This person would edit video for our annual sales/ops meeting (footage of prior sales/ops meetings) and perhaps one or two additional meetings per year.
Finally, for this sales meeting, this person would create a custom powerpoint template and visually clean up and edit all executives powerpoints.

New in the Springtime
Yes, the year, marches on... (I'm trying to find a March pun - as in the month - but they're all too terrible, even for me).
Here is some good stuff for you learning types, brought to you by the experts, with a one-sentence summary designed to make these courses sound as awesome as they will be:
1. Exploring L.A. Design - Field trips to fancy studios!
2. An Introduction to Mapping - Learn how to make your own super smart infographics!
3. The Art of Integrative Thinking - Increase your genius ah-ha moments when solving probs!
4. Web Design III - Have dynamic and rich content on your website make you dynamic and rich!*
5. Beginning and Intermediate ActionScript - Know how to do the really hard stuff in Flash!
6. CSS II Web Development - Make sure people can find your streamlined, efficient website!
That's a lot of new courses this quarter, if I do say so myself.
* No promises on that last part.

Stefan Bucher - Hear Him

Images by Stefan Bucher. Recognize the first two? Those are UCLA Extension catalogs.
To hear him speak, mark your calendar for Thursday, March 18.
Margo Chase and Stefan Bucher: The Deets

Importance: High
I've got a couple of guest speakers coming to my "Design History 2" class in the LAT Media Room at Art Center's Hillside campus, and everyone's welcome to join. And the first appearance is just a few days away.
Margo Chase was Twilight long before TV's "Twilight;" she gained her reputation as the entertainment industry's favorite go-to gal for Goth graphics, working in music (Madonna!), TV (Buffy!), and film (Dracula!). Her Chase Design Group has since expanded to identity development for international clients as diverse as Starbucks, Nike, and the Cartoon Network. She is also a recent recipient of an AIGA Fellows Award. Come hear Margo share valuable career tips for surviving and thriving in the design field.
Meanwhile, check out these short videos to see Margo discuss her career and to preview her studio's work.

And wait: there's more coming up. Stefan G. Bucher will be presenting to my class two weeks after Margo. At last year's national AIGA conference in Memphis, the general consensus was that, for sheer entertainment value alone, the Stefans Sagmeister and Bucher topped the list of featured speakers.
This Stefan is the founder of 344 Design, an author, and the illustrator responsible for the Daily Monster phenomenon that's recently invaded PBS's "Electric Company." He'll discuss how he's built his own practice while juggling this variety of creative pursuits.
So that's Margo Chase this coming Thursday, March 4th, and Stefan Bucher on Thursday, March 18th, both at 7 p.m. And admission and parking is free! So save both the dates!
