The Word from Michael Dooley: Freedom on the Fence

Political Poster| Konstanty Sopocko 1948

"Freedom on the Fence" is a documentary about Polish poster design. It's also the name of an event that's taking place next Friday, March 5th, at 11 a.m. as part of my LMU "History of Design" class.

It's only 40 minutes long but I consider the film to be a must-see for any graphic design student, as important in its own way as "Helvetica." And with the guest speaker presentation and gallery tour added, this will definitely be a valuable two-hour opportunity for professionals as well as students to broaden their knowledge and enhance their learning.

Carolyn Peter is the Director/Curator at LMU's Laband Art Gallery and my collaborator on this event. She is arranging for the film's Producer/Director to fly down from Oregon for her talk.

Check out a short preview of the film, with Seymour Chwast, Milton Glaser, and Steve Heller among the talking heads...

We're Closed this Friday

Just so you know, because of the salary reduction/furlough plan adopted by the UC Regents, UCLA Extension will be closed on Friday, February 12 through the weekend. The 15th is President's Day, so we'll also be closed then. We'll all be back on Tuesday the 16th.

Obviously, Friday is no longer a good deadline for Emerge. That's not going to work since there will not be anyone here. I've extended the deadline until the 16th, which is when we have to take the work to PDC. With that in mind, if you're going to submit on Tuesday, please let me know. It's going to be a close call, but I thought it better than making it tomorrow (although please, submit tomorrow if you can).

I'm sorry for the mistake!

Marian Bantjes at Art Center College of Design

After a decade working as a book designer and typesetter in Vancouver, British Columbia, Marian Bantjes decided to chuck it all and reinvent her practice. Widely hailed in the recent resurgence of ornamentation in graphic design, her connection to that tradition draws on her 20 years of work in painting and printmaking. Now a self-proclaimed “graphic artist,” Bantjes produces designs of intricate craft, elaborate patterning, and complex ornamentation. Her work has been widely acclaimed and her projects include commissions for a limited-edition cover for Wallpaper magazine, catalogues and bags for Saks Fifth Avenue, illustrations for such publications as Yale Alumni Magazine, Wired, and Print.

Design History and Context Visual Recap

Poster design by DCA certificate student Carol Kaufman

Here is a slideshow of student work from Michael Dooley's fall 2009 course. Check it out!

Here is the description of the work: Based on in-depth studies of the historical contexts and formal characteristics of works produced by significant graphic design figures from various eras, students create a series of posters announcing (fictional) lectures about these designers.

Way back when we had our small DCA graduation, Rebeca Mendez spoke (was that 2007?) to our graduates, which was way cool. I handed out certificates (or possibly rolls of paper symbolizing certificates) which was also way cool.

Hiring at The Autry (and they work with interns, too)

Patrick Fredrickson sent me a heads up that they're hiring and that they work with interns. Scott and I went there on a field trip, and it was awesome. The halls where the design staff work were lined with notes and sketches and ideas... Maybe some of you who have taken or are taking Designing Experiences with Merritt Price, may be interested?

Here is the post for Exhibition Designer:

The Autry National Center is seeking a highly motivated and creative designer with strong typography, graphics, and communication skills to join the Exhibits Department. You will be an integral member of the department, working on a variety of projects, from print pieces, to environmental signage, to 3-dimensional graphics and environments.

Position Summary: The Designer works closely with and supports the Exhibition Design Department to develop, manage, and maintain the immediate and sustained value of the visitor experience. He/She will help to develop design strategies that support the needs of individual projects and the museum.

Essential functions include: preparing models and graphics for presentations and production; developing and coordinating production, delivery, and installation of artwork; and providing support for the conceptualization, development, and implementation of exhibitions and graphics. The ability to interact with a variety of departments, work within budget, and maintain design criteria that meets the clients needs is necessary. Some extended work hours as needed.

Qualifications: A BA in design, studio arts, or museum studies is required as well as 1-3 years of design experience. Must be fluent in the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign. Experience with Vectorworks, and/or Sketch-Up is helpful as is practice in model building and sketching for design development. An understanding of environmental signage or ADA and Universal design guidelines and knowledge of interior design or furniture design is a big plus.

Masaki Koike Sharing the Love

I know it's 2010, but I saw this JOY in my "images" folder while looking for something else, and I thought, "Oh, yeah. I really like this image." And, since Masaki is teaching this quarter (and mentoring, too) I thought I'd post it.

Then, when I went back to my folder to find what it was I was looking for, I saw that there was also a 2010 card. Thanks for the digital greetings!

This is an unique opportunity for students to represent their schools, network with other students and professionals, and showcase what they can offer.

If you need to make other drop-off arrangements, please email dca@uclaextension.edu at least two days in advance. The work will be curated, and not all who enter will be included.
